Client Feature: From the UK’s Fastest Cupra Ateca to a Next-Level MK8 Golf R

27th August 2025

At Quotax Modified Car Insurance, we’re passionate about celebrating the dedication, creativity, and engineering that go into every modified build. Our clients don’t just drive cars—they create them. One such standout is enthusiast @fas745f, who has gone from building the UK’s fastest Cupra Ateca to developing a next-level Stage 3 MK8 Golf R.

The Cupra Ateca: 530BHP and Unmatched Determination

The story begins with a Cupra Ateca, widely recognised as one of the fastest examples in the UK. Running a 530BHP 2.0L 4-cylinder EA888 Gen 4 engine, this SUV was built for the strip. On drag days, only 700+ BHP BMW builds could consistently keep it in check.

But chasing that kind of speed came at a cost. With Gen 4 engine components inside a Gen 3 chassis, the Ateca was always pushing boundaries. Every upgrade introduced new challenges—software quirks, hardware limitations, and compatibility hurdles.

Eventually, at a dyno day, disaster struck. A rear differential bearing failure ended the build’s progress and passion in one blow. Repair was possible, but the decision was made: it was time for a new platform.

The Natural Progression: MK8 Golf R

Enter the Volkswagen MK8 Golf R. With the same EA888 engine as the Cupra but paired with a stronger chassis and Magna’s torque-vectoring differential, it offered the perfect foundation for the next chapter. Importantly, much of the existing performance hardware could carry over—making it both a smart and exciting choice.

Stage 3 MK8 Golf R Build: Power Meets Precision

The Golf R project is a showcase of balance: raw power, track-ready handling, and a unique aesthetic.

Performance Upgrades:

  • Garrett GT2563 Turbo
  • Decimal Tenths Custom Stage 3 ECU Map
  • TVS Stage 3 TCU Software
  • Eventuri Intake & Forge Intercooler
  • Cobra Race Exhaust + Trackslag Sports Cat
  • Racingline ignition & cooling upgrades

Brakes & Wheels:

  • AP Radi-cal II 6-Pot Brakes
  • Protrack One Lightweight Wheels

Styling & Chassis:

  • CT Carbon Spoiler Extension & Rear Diffuser
  • Racingline Carbon K Brace & Subframe Brace
  • Carbon bonnet & engine bay dress-up parts incoming

The result? A Stage 3 MK8 Golf R that’s not just quick but reliable, stylish, and built for more than just straight-line speed.

From Reluctant Modifier to True Enthusiast

What makes this story even better is that modifying wasn’t always part of the plan. For years, warranty concerns kept upgrades off the table. But after seeing friends constantly tune and improve their cars, the temptation was too strong.

The Cupra Ateca was the gateway, but the Golf R represents the evolution. And the dream doesn’t stop here—the long-term goal is a Porsche GT3 RS, the ultimate reward for years of dedication.
